What Hiring Managers Think When You Say You Are Passionate About Science

Mar 02, 2026

If you have interviewed for an MSL role, you have likely said it or at least thought it.
“I am passionate about science.”

While that statement is well-intentioned, many hiring managers hear it multiple times a day. Passion alone does not differentiate candidates. What matters is how that passion shows up in real-world behavior.

In this post, we break down what hiring managers actually think when they hear this phrase, what they are really trying to assess, and how aspiring MSLs can communicate scientific passion in a way that stands out.

Why “Passionate About Science” Is Not Enough

Hiring managers already assume you care about science. Most MSL candidates hold advanced degrees, have completed residencies or fellowships, or come from research-intensive backgrounds.

When a candidate says they are passionate about science, hiring managers immediately ask:

  • How does that passion translate into action?
  • Does this person apply science strategically?
  • Can they adapt their knowledge to different audiences?

Without examples, the phrase feels generic.

What Hiring Managers Are Really Listening For

When interviewers probe deeper, they want evidence of how you engage with science, not just that you enjoy it.

Strong signals include:

  • Curiosity about unmet medical needs
  • Comfort discussing uncertainty or conflicting data
  • Ability to synthesize information across studies
  • Interest in how data changes clinical practice

For example, saying:
“I enjoy staying current on emerging trial data and thinking about how it may impact treatment decisions”

is far more compelling than simply stating passion.

How to Show Scientific Passion Through Examples

The strongest candidates demonstrate passion by sharing specific behaviors.

Examples include:

  • Describing how you independently track late-breaking data
  • Explaining how you prepared for journal club discussions
  • Sharing how you adjusted explanations based on audience expertise
  • Discussing moments when new data changed your perspective

These examples show engagement, growth, and applied thinking.

Reframing Your Answer in Interviews

Instead of saying you are passionate about science, show how science drives your decisions.

Try framing responses like this:

  • “What excites me about medical affairs is translating emerging data into meaningful clinical conversations.”
  • “I enjoy engaging with data that challenges current practice and discussing its implications with clinicians.”

  • “Science motivates me when it leads to better questions and deeper understanding.”

This positions you as thoughtful and field-ready.

Final Thoughts

Hiring managers are not looking for enthusiasm alone. They are looking for candidates who live science through curiosity, adaptability, and communication.

If you can show how science informs your thinking and interactions, your passion becomes obvious without needing to say the word at all.
